9-14-23 - The completed greenhouse and restored Farmall tractor.
8-18-23 - This is what the deer have done to my cucumbers and tomatoes. Never had this problem before, so next year I'll have to use a deer fence.
8-18-23 - Greenhouse progress continues
8-6-23 - Greenhouse progress so far
6-15-23 - Work has begun on the greenhouse!
6-01-23 - The latest addition to the farm, a vintage Farmall tractor.
06-07-22 - I'm going to be trying something crazy--I'm going to try to cultivate avocados in middle Tennessee! These have survived the past two winters indoors. Soon I will need to build a greenhouse for them.
06-07-22 - Along with my native (and very productive) Wild Deer Pears, I have added Bartlett Pears. The tree is heavy with fruit this year!
06-07-22 - Apples are difficult to cultivate without pesticides. I have five varieties, some resistant to cedar rust and other diseases, some not. I am testing a new organic spray this year that seems to be working. Now to dissuade the birds and racoons:)
06-07-22 - I will also have persimmons this season, and for the first time since I put the trees in a few years ago. Another native Tennessee fruit tree. The fruit is quite sour, but makes a great jam.
06-07-22 - This will be another productive year for pawpaws. They were productive last year as well, while I was on the Appalachian Trail, so I pruned heavily in February to relieve the stress and stimulate new growth. If you'd like to sample a pawpaw (Tennessee's native fruit), show up on the farm around September 1 and help yourself!
06-07-22 - The new porch is coming along well. I'm finally getting the hang of sawing angles. Love that Thompson Water Seal!
06-07-22 - This is a great year for blueberries. Some of the limbs are so heavy with berries that they are lying on the ground. The bowl of berries represents my daily harvest, which began the last week of May and will continue into July. I cultivated three varieties, each resistant to bugs and disease in this area: Patriot, Blueray, and Sweetheart. All fruit on my farm are cultivated with organic practices.
05-19-22 - Finally, after eleven years since I planted it, there will be pecans this fall!
12-07-21 - It's a little wintry on the farm right now. I think I'll go skiing this afternoon.
12-24-21 - Here is my latest project, just completed this morning. Why not drop on by and leave a few old books of your own?
12-1-21 - The raucous squawking of blue jays drew my attention just after sunrise this morning, where I noticed this eastern screech owl (Megascops asio) in red morph plumage perched inexplicably toward the base of the old maple tree. I had never seen one before, and assumed it would fly away before I could return with my camera. It remained for quite some time, motionless except for its head, which followed me insouciantly as I circled for a photo. Unperturbed, the owl allowed me to come quite close. The blue jays continued to pester the owl until it flew away.
